DIY GUIDE – INSTALLING SLIDING WARDROBE DOORS

Robeoutlet sliding wardrobe doors arrive factory-assembled with top and bottom tracks included. This guide explains installing sliding wardrobe doors, from preparing the opening to fitting the doors and checking their movement. Installation can take from 30 minutes, depending on your experience and the installation conditions.

Before You Start

Check that the delivered kit matches your order before starting your sliding wardrobe door installation. The kit includes the factory-assembled doors and the top and bottom tracks. Screws and wall plugs are not included.

Make sure the opening is clean, the floor and ceiling are suitable, and there is enough depth for your chosen system. Check that the track mounting surfaces are sound and that you have suitable tools and fixings.

Measurements should be completed before ordering. For help, see the Measuring Guide for Sliding Wardrobe Doors.

Tools and Materials Required

For a typical DIY sliding wardrobe door installation, prepare:

  • Tape measure and pencil

  • Spirit level

  • Pozidriv screwdriver

  • Electric drill and drill bits

  • Screws and wall plugs suitable for your ceiling, walls and floor

  • General-purpose silicone, if you choose to glue the bottom track (available from any hardware store)

Fixings depend on whether the track is secured to timber, masonry or another surface. Check their suitability before drilling.

Step 1 – Check and Prepare the Wardrobe Opening

Before installing wardrobe door tracks:

  1. Remove dust and debris from the installation area.

  2. Check the floor and upper mounting surface.

  3. Confirm there is sufficient depth for the selected tracks.

  4. Check for hidden cables or pipes before drilling.

  5. Ensure skirting boards, cornices and other features will not obstruct the doors.

Do not alter structural elements or remove trims without assessing the installation requirements. Resolve any issues with the opening before proceeding.

Step 2 – Position and Install the Top Track

The top track must be correctly aligned and securely fixed before the doors are fitted.

  1. Position the top track on the ceiling or at the top of the opening, where you took your measurements.

  2. Check that it is level with a spirit level.

  3. Drill and plug the fixing points, then fix the track with screws approximately every 600 mm.

  4. If the opening is uneven, use packers to bring the track to the correct height.

Use fixings appropriate for the mounting surface.

Step 3 – Position and Install the Bottom Track

The bottom track must align with the top track so the doors sit vertically and move smoothly. Place the bottom track directly below the top track, so the doors will stand vertically. You can fix it with screws, in the same way as the top track, or glue it to the floor with general-purpose silicone. Both options work well. Silicone takes up to 24 hours to dry, so avoid using the doors during this time.

Step 4 – Insert the Sliding Wardrobe Doors

When following our guide on how to install sliding wardrobe doors, start with the back door (the one in the rear groove).

  1. Insert the top edge of the door into the top track at an angle (A on the image).

  2. Straighten the door and lower its wheels into the grooves of the bottom track (B).

  3. Check that the door is seated securely in both tracks.

  4. Repeat for the remaining doors, following your track configuration.

Handle mirror and glass panels carefully, protecting their edges from impact. Get assistance if a door is too heavy or awkward to lift safely. Never force a door into position; check the track alignment and roller position if it does not fit.

Step 5 – Adjust the Doors

After installation, check that the doors move smoothly, stand vertically and do not rub against the floor or surrounding surfaces. Sliding wardrobe door adjustment may be needed if the doors appear uneven.

Check that:

  • The rollers sit correctly in their channels.

  • The gaps between adjacent doors are reasonably even.

  • The doors move freely without excessive force.

  • The tracks remain securely fixed.

All our doors – Framed, Frameless and Slimline – have adjustable wheels. Turn the screw above the wheel with a screwdriver to raise or lower the door by up to 10 mm, for example if the door does not fit between the tracks or you want it to line up with the wall. The top track has enough room for the door to move by this amount.

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these common errors when following sliding wardrobe door installation instructions:

  • Skipping preparation: Check the opening, mounting surfaces and available depth first.

  • Misaligning the tracks: Use a spirit level and check the doors' vertical position.

  • Using unsuitable fixings: Choose fixings appropriate for the mounting surface.

  • Fitting doors into the wrong channels: Install the innermost door first and follow the track layout.

  • Ignoring roller position: Check the rollers before testing the doors.

  • Operating doors before silicone cures: Follow the product's curing instructions.

  • Forcing the doors: Check for obstructions or misalignment instead.

  • Ignoring visible damage: Resolve damage to glass, mirrors, frames or tracks before installation.

Installation Tips for Different Sliding Wardrobe Door Systems

Robeoutlet offers Framed, Frameless and Slimline sliding wardrobe doors. Track dimensions vary by system:

Door system

Double track

Triple track

Framed

82 mm

122 mm

Frameless

82 mm

122 mm

Slimline

55 mm

82 mm

For three doors, a triple track is recommended because each door runs in its own channel, providing wider access to the wardrobe. A double track can also accommodate three doors where the configuration permits, but access is more limited.

The installation steps are the same for all three systems; only the track sizes differ. Robeoutlet supplies the DIY kit but does not provide installation services. If you need help, email us at sales@robeoutlet.com.au or contact us by filling out our enquiry form.
